UNIVERSITY FINANCES

“Insufficient

Funds*’

(N.Z. Press Association)

DUNEDIN, Oct. 26.

The universities of New Zealand need more money than they are getting, said Professor M. E. Volin, the Director of the Institute of Mineral Research at Michigan Technological University, on the eve of his return to the United States after spending seven months at the University of Otago. The thing that had been uppermost in his mind during his stay in this country was the often-expressed opinion that the universities of New Zealand were not on a par with the better universities in the United Kingdom and in America, he said. “From my experience here I would say that the university does an excellent job with the funds it gets, but the funds are insufficient for the university to grow in a healthv manner.

“I do not think it is possible for the Government to provide enough funds for the university to operate and there should be other sources of income.

Professor Volin believes that if there were provision to make tax-free gifts to the universities this would open up new sources of income that would help the universi* ties to build up to a level of excellence.
