RETURNING TO RACING

FTER a period in " semi - retirement coaching young athletes in the Toe H club, the former Canterbury sprint champion, L. A. (Buzz) Jones, is planning to make a serious competitive comeback this season. Although it is not known which events he will specialise in, he will probably concentrate on the

100, 220 and 440 yd events, the same as before. With proper conditioning, he could well provide the New Zealand quarter mile champion, D. W. Mackenzie, with some strong competition in this event. He could prove extremely valuable to Canterbury in relay events this season and will certainly add to the strength of sprinting in the province. Canterbury now has no less than five ath-

letes capable of running 100yds in lOsec or less—A. G. Steel, Mackenzie, Jones, K. Simpson and M. Walls. Jones, who once shared the 100 yd record of 9.9 sec with the Empire Games sprinter, D. R. Batten, was forced to retire in 1963 because of injuries to the hamstring of his left leg. His best time for the 100yds is 9.6. recorded in a handicap event at Rangiora.
