RABBITS CLEARED CLOSE TO CITY
CIV Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 14. Five men, each armed with a combined rifle—smallbore shotgun—and a powerful light. last night cleared Mount Wellington, 10 miles from the city, of 179 rabbits in a five-hour shooting mission. The men were specially trained by the Ararimu Rabbit Board, of the Franklin district. to use the dual gun as the most effective means of pest control. i The light they used reI sembled those of miners, with
the exception that this produced a long powerful beam provided by batteries that supplied 40,000 light candlepower. Brian Olsen took 62 rabbits. They have been using the method of light and shotgun for 21 months throughout four districts covered by the board, and have shot 7LOOO rabbits and opossum. When the shoot finished at midnight, there were only three rounds of ammunition left between the five, and there were still more rabbits to be had on the mountain.
