HARBOUR BOARD
Citizens Give Policy
Completion of the Cashin quay scheme, together with further berthage protection if that is found necessary after further investigations by the Hydraulic Research Institute in Wallingford, is the first plank of the Christchurch Citizens’ and Ratepayers’ Association's policy for the Lyttelton Harbour Board.
The policy was announced yesterday by the deputychairman of the board (Mr F. I. Sutton) who is seeking re-election as one of the five city members.
Complete revision of plans for modernisation of the inner harbour is given second place, and the policy says this will be done bearing in mind radical changes throughout the world in the handling of cargo by roll-on, roll-off ships and the great use of containers, pallets and road transport.
There is an undertaking to investigate the purchase of land adjacent to wharves for off-wharf handling of cargo. A survey of all existing board buildings and stores will be made to see whether they are being used to the best advantage. The mechanical and other methods of loading meat in a more hygienic manner will be further investigated. Additional yachting facilities will be built on completion of major port development schemes, the policy says. Generally, priority will be given to capital works which will give the greatest economic benefits to the people of Canterbury.
Report Soon.—A plea not to jump to conclusions about the side effects of the contraceptive pill has been made by the chairman of the British committee on the safety of drugs, Sir Derrick Dunlop. The committee’s interim report will be published soon. V
