‘Walked Into Spring’

Christchurch Townswomen’s Guilds welcomed visitors to their organisation’s Dominion council meeting at the Horticultural Hall yesterday with flowers.

The scent of thousands of spring blooms and masses of blossom permeated the hall from huge pedestal bowls along the walls, on the stage in posy bowls on the conference table and from sprays presented to specially-invited guests and executive members.

The flowers were supplied by members of Christchurch guilds, who

have been nurturing and guarding them in their gardens with loving care since the first buds appeared.

Bowl arrangements, sprays and posies were made by a committee headed by Mrs E. Meers.

A North Island delegate, who comes from an area where flowers are only beginning to bloom after a long, cold winter, remarked: “Coming here this morning was like walking straight into spring. What a wonderful welcome. I now know why Christchurch Is called the Garden City of New Zealand.”
