The president of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre (Mr W. A. If the games were not held in Christchurch in 1970, they would, "without doubt,” be held here in 1974, Mr Kennedy said.
He urged all members of the sport to support the British Empire Games Promotion. Can terbury, in its bld to get the games for Christchurch in 1970. All-weather Track Tenders for the construction of the all-weather track at Queen Elizabeth Park would be called by the Christchurch City Council in the very near future. Mr Kennedy said. “We are very near the fulfilment of the venture. 1 was hoping that I could say tonight that the council had called for tenders. It hasn't quite come to this, but it will In the very near future." The construction of the track was one of the most Important developments in the sport of recent years.
Queen Elizabeth Park would become the headquarters of the centre, but It was the Intention of the centre to retain the use of Rugby Park. said Mr Kennedy. "We are confident that the numbers in the sport will grow to such a state that we will have to use two venues.”
