LONDON, Sept. 14
The Government today reached a diplomatic settlement in the “battle of the bosoms” with the Sierra Leone troupe of African dancers. The dancers —who by tradition perform most of their dances naked from the waist
up—have agreed to perform dances which by tradition do not require their breasts bared, when they do a show in Trafalgar square. The free open-air show is expected to draw crowds of Londoners at lunchtime tomorrow; it will act as a cur-tain-raiser to the Commonwealth arts . festival which will open tomorrow night. Earlier this week, it looked as though the lunchtime show would have to be abandoned. The Ministry of Works had refused to allow the dancers to perform with bare bosoms and the dancers refused to compromise their culture by breaking the traditions of their dancing. The Ministry has raised no objection to the 80-strong dance group performing barebreasted in their Festival Theatre presentations. They will also be dancing naked from the waist up on a television show.
