Street Collections
Sir.—Would the three street I collections this week set a record for Christchurch? On Saturday, August 21, the Y.M.C.A. were collecting at New Brighton, a suburb of Christchurch. Then they had another go on Wednesday, the 25th. Mystery parcels were sold on Friday, thus bringing the total to three. Could the i council make a statement about this?—Yours, etc., INTERESTED. August 27, 1965. {The Town C.erk (Mr C. S. Bowie) says: “One organisation alone conducted a street appeal during the week referred to, namely the Y.M.C.A., who had permission to collect in New Brighton on Saturday, August 21, and in the rest of the city on Wednesday, August 25. The Lions Club was given permission to sell mystery envelopes for the Town Hall Promotion Fund on Friday, August 27. this being considered to be a sale of value for money and not in the nature of a street appeal. The public response was very gratifying on both occasions, but it is unlikely that a similar set of circumstances will recur.”]
