START IN OCTOBER
Paremoremo Prison (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND Sept. 15. A start on building the £2.5 million maximum security prison at Paremoremo will probably begin about the middle of October. One central area of the site was ready for foundation work and about half the 25,000 yards of clay required for a second building area had been shifted, the Ministry of Works senior engineer for Auckland north (Mr E. N. Croad) said today. Good progress had been made and as the ground had dried out in recent fine weather a big earthscraper had been brought in to help the dragline already on the site.
“I don’t think there will be any hold-up, unless the skies open up for a month again,” said Mr Croad. Enough of the site should be ready in time for the building contractor to make “a reasonable sort of start.”
A contract has been let for the supply and erection of steel beams to support a new roof for the Auckland Prison, which was badly damaged by fire in the riot two months ago.
Construction will start next week in the chapel area, above the prison administrative offices.
