New Phase In N.Z. Cricket? (N Z. Prest Association) AUCKLAND, September 14. The next era tn New Zealand cricket may be the "Sparling era." said Mr E. R. Sutherland, the acting chairman, at the annual meeting of the Auckland Cricket Association tonight "New Zealand cricket had its Hadlee era.” said Mr Sutherland. "and with his retirement, the John Reid era has concluded. Mr Sutherland said he was hopeful that the adventurous leadership of J. T. Sparling, the captain of Auckland In recent seasons, might start a new era in New Zealand cricket. “It is hard for administrators to know how to improve the rather poor image of New Zealand cricket on the playing field." said Mr Sutherland. "I believe it is a matter of fundamentals—plus the spirit of adventure." The use of the tour of Pakistan and India as a preface to the 1965 New Zealand tour of England was criticised bv Mr Sutherland. "I think the possibility of a short tour of Australia first should be looked into," he said
