NOTIFIABLE DISEASES

Family With Dysentery

A family of four and two other women all had bacillary dysentery last week. The Christchurch Medical Officer of Health (Dr. L. F. Jepson) said it was the Sonne type of bacillary dysentery, caused by an organism present in the bowel. Like infective hepatitis (of which there were another four cases last week) it was passed from person to person, frequently by food. Dr. Jepson said low standards of personal hygiene helped spread both diseases. The seven cases of bacillary dysentery were contracted by a family of two adults and two children in the city area, a woman in her forties in the Waimairi County and a woman in her eighties in Heathcote County. Two young boys in Waimairi County had infective hepatitis and also a man of unknown age and another man in his thirties in the city area. There were three cases of pulmonary tuberculosis and one of eclampsia among the cases of notifiable disease reported to the department last week.
