Trip First Prize In N.Z. Dressmaking Contest
Women throughout New Zealand have already started to make garments for this year’s national dressmaking contest, which offers as first
prize a fortnight’s trip for two to Surfers’ Paradise. The country has been divided into eight areas in which preliminary contests will be held, with the winners later competing for the trip: The contest aims to help to raise the standard of home dressmaking. Prizes totalling £lOOO are offered. The areas are Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Wanganui, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill. From next Friday, four weekly parades of the best garments entered will be held in each centre. At each weekly parade, three semifinalists will be chosen to go forward to the final area judging, which will take place after the weekly parade on October 8. At this parade, first, second and third placegetters will be selected. The first place-getter in each area will then go forward to compete in the national final. The eight area winners will be judged in Auckland and the winner announced on October 21. The winner and her companion will fly from Auckland or Wellington to Brisbane. They will stay at the Chevron Paradise Hotel at Surfers’
Paradise for two weeks and have £5O spending money.
There will be many complimentary entertainments, including visits to Stradbroke Island, the water ski revue, the Marineland porpoise pool, Gilltraps auto museum, and free dinners, dancing and taxis. A free tour of the Gold Coast will be another highlight of the trip.
