Most Points By Drayton

The Hornby utility player, I. T. Drayton, was the leading goalkicker and points scorer in the 1965 Canterbury Rugby League club championship.

Drayton scored 149 points for Hornby—five tries and 67 goals. He also scored 32 for Canterbury. bringing his total to iBl with the Thacker Shield match still to be played.

Two other players, J. P. Hawthorne (Papanui) and W. D. Bert (Linwood) scored centuries. Hawthorne scored eight tries and 48 goals (120 points) in club matches and eight goals for Canterbury, a total of 136 points. Beri scored three tries and kicked 51 goals

to score 111 points for Linwood.

Others to score more than 50 in club matches were G. Teaho (Addingtin) 92. A. Tuuta (Sydenham) 85, and W. Morrison (Christchurch) 64.

Although he failed to score in the last six championship matches the young Linwood wing, V. Burtt, was the leading try-scorer in his first season of Rugby League. He crossed for 14 tries, two more than the Christchurch wing, J. Williams. Next came B. Wiki (Addington) and T. Gage (Kaiapoi), with 11.

Most tries by a forward were scored by D. W. Moore (Hornby) and J. A. Flanagan (Linwood), each with eight. A. F. McNaughton (Addington) scored seven in his first senior season.

An unusual feature of the Papanui statistics was the fact that 22 players scored points in senior matches.
