‘TEMPORARY’
(New Zealand Press Association;
WELLINGTON, Sept. 1. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said tonight he had no intention of retiring. H had been asked at a press conference about his description of himself as “temporary” leader of the Government at the industrial safety congress in Wellington today. Tonight Mr Holyoake said he was in the habit of referring to himself as the temporary leader, but there was no question of his retiring. In a democracy no-one
was justified In describing himself as a permanent prime minister, he said, smiling. When Mr Holyoake described himself as “temporary” leader at the congress, Mr T. E. Skinner, president of the Federation of Labour, speaking later, turned to Mr Holyoake and said, with a grin: “I wonder whether you were giving a hint of your early retirement from politics.” The Prime Minister returned the grin and Mr Skinner continued with his address.
