NUCLEAR WEAPONS
No Withdrawal From Europe (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 28. The Defence Department says that the United States will keep tactical nuclear weapons “with front-line troops in Europe.” The department specifically denied any present intentions of withdrawing the “Davy Crockett,” a front-line atomic gun, from Europe. It has been supplied to five American divisions. The Davy Crockett, variously called bazooka and mortar, is small enough to be handled by two or three men and can be carried by jeep. It is a long, tubular weapon I with a solid fuel missile I which throws a bulbous atomic warhead. Its explosive I force is equal only to a few tons of T.N.T., whereas most nuclear weapons are compared with thousands and millions of tons of T.N.T. It is, therefore, small by atomic standards, being designed to break up enemy assaults and support counterattacks.
