DEATH IN FIRE

Too Fierce For Rescue (N.Z. Press Association) WAIROA, May 30. A man was burned to death in a house fire at Nuhaka about midnight last night. He was Harawara Wairau, father of two young children. Mr Wairau was alone in the house at the time. His wife and children were visiting a farm property about 12 miles away. Wairoa police said Mr Wairau returned to his home on the main Nuhaka-Gisborne highway about 10.30 p.m. A neighbour noticed the house on fire about midnight. He suspected Mr Wairau was in the house, but the fire had such a hold on the building that entry could not be gained. The Nuhaka Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the fire and the man’s body was found in a bedroom. An inquest will be held.
