ROUND-UP OF RUGBY

8-3 Win By Otago (N.Z. Press Association) Otago won the opening match of its representative Rugby season when it beat Southland, 8-3, at Carisbrook on Saturday. All the points were scored in the first half, Otago going to an 8-nil lead after 22 minutes from a penalty goal by E. Taylor and a brilliant try by the AH Black first five-eighths, E. W. Kirton, converted by Taylor. The play of the Otago forwards, who were not expected to match the strong Southland pack, and Kirton’s fine attacking play were largely responsible for Otago’s win. Southland’s points came from a penalty goal kicked by the five-eighths, L. D. Hollands. Bay of Plenty outplayed East Coast, 31-3 at Te Aroha, leading 18-0 at half-time. For Bay of Plenty, tries were scored by R. Walker, W. Gray, E. Beattie, M. Stone, A. Jennings, and R. J. Conway. W. Potai converted five tries and Beattie kicked a field goal, H. P. Milner kicked a penalty for East Coast. A try with only four minutes of play left, enabled Wanganui to beat Manawatu, 12-11. For U 7 anganui, C. L. Pierce and B. Boswell scored tries, M. Farrell kicked a penalty goal and P. A. Gaukrodger a dropped goal. R. B. Florence, J. D. P. Taitoko and R. O’Neill scored tries for Manaw’atu and Taitoko kicked one conversion.
