Give-Away Girl Taken Back Home

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ADELAIDE, May 30. Susy, the three-year-old girl who was to have been given away by her mother, was taken to Melbourne to meet her “new parents” and then mysteriously taken home to Adelaide by her mother this week-end.

On Friday, Susy was taken to Melbourne by her mother and accompanied on the flight by a woman who has not been identied. They were met by the Melbourne couple who intended to adopt Susy and then taken to the Brighton Savoy Hotel for the night. The Melbourne couple arranged to pick them up in the morning to show Susy her new home. Left a Note But the two women left the hotel about 10 p.m. with Susy. They left an envelope for the Melbourne couple containing money and a message: “With thanks. Enclosed is air fare.” Susy and the two women returned to Adelaide on a late afternoon flight from Melbourne today. As they left the plane a man met them and escorted them across the tarmac. They were spotted by reporters. The second woman pulled a paper over her face and began to run With Susy. The mother, weeping, followed, calling out, “Leave me alone.” The man turned to reporters and said: “No comment. I warned you. No comment. She will say nothing.” The three got into a white car, the unidentified woman still holding the paper to her face and clutching Susy rightly. Hundreds of people throughout Australia want to adopt Susy after seeing her picture in newspapers. The mother, aged 28, said she wanted to give Susy away because she could not give her a good upbringing. Telephone Call

Among those who wrote asking to adopt Susy was a young Melbourne couple. The

man said: “We got a ’phone call from a woman. ‘I am Susy’s mother,’ she said. ‘I have chosen you out of ail the people who wrote in for Susy.’ We paid their air fares and arranged for them to be picked up in Adelaide.” The manageress of the Bright Savoy Hotel, Mrs Cecile Delbridge, said the two women and Susy left the hotel about an hour and a half after they arrived. “They went out the side entrance. That was the last time I saw them.”
