RUGBY LEAGUE Fine Individual Play In Tavendale Series

Winning performances by Christchurch and Hornby enabled these two sides to remain unbeaten in the Tavendale Cup Rugby League competition after two series of matches.

This competition was held on Saturday instead of the championship because of the absence of key players in Auckland with the Canterbury team.

The matches on Saturday were marked by two very fine j individual performances. j Hornby's replacement | centre. T. Williams, kicked' eight goals to enable his side j to beat Linwood by a margin I of 12 points. Papanui's back, J. Hawthorne. scored in every way possible to record 18 points of his team’s 21. He scored two tries, converted two. kicked three penalties, and was successful with a field goal. ; Matches played were:— s Papanui 21, Svdenham ' 13. Christchurch 13, Ad- i dington 3. Hornby 25, Linwood 13. ; Kaiapoi 12. Marist 11.

Tavendale Cup points are:— Hornby and Christchurch 4. Sydenham. Addington, PapaYiui and Kaiapoi 2, Linwood and Marist 0.

Used Strength In Forwards CHRISTCHURCH 13: E. Bennett, R. Franklin, and T. Parker scored tries. W. Morrison •kicked two goals. ADDINGTON 3: R Cotter scored a try. Using its strong forwards to greater advantage Christchurch had a comfortable win over Addington. The losing team’s backs were a better looking seven than their opponents but they received fewer opportunities to display their ability. Addington was not able to match the winners in the forwards.

When pinned in their own half. Christchurch was able to make ground with short breaks

by individual forwards whop used their weight to advantage, p Christchurch won more ball 1 i than Addington and established : i a lead of eight points by half ' < time and further increased this ' after the break with another : try and a penalty. From there on Addington : never looked like bridging the gap. Referee: Mr P. Yaxley. T. Williams i Kicks Well HORNBY 25: D. Condick. G. i Woodgate and D. Moore scored > ; tries. T. Williams kicked eightJ j goals. LINWOOD 13: V. Burtt, M. j i Whittaker and T. Brott scored I tries. Two goals by W. Beri. j Splendid goal-kicking by the i youthful centre. T. Williams, oroved to be the deciding factor in the match between Hornby and Linwood as both sides scored three tries each.

Hornby had a great advantage in possession but in spite of being starved of the ball Linwood's backs looked very dangerous when on attack. To score the same number of tries from less opportunities Linwood performed well, particularly as the forwards were outplayed by the opposing pack.

• Play became a little heated I among the forwards on two occasions and after the second. J. Fonotea. the Linwood prop. i was sent from the field. j Hornby's backs were almost [completely different from those (who have played regularly in championshin matches and : Linwood suffered most from re1 placements in the forwards. ! Williams gave easily the i finest kicking display at the j Grounds this year and ; had only one failure in nine j attempts”. Some of his kicks were difficult ones, well out and 1 at an angle. , Referee: Mr T. Houston. i Narrow W in By Kaiapoi KAIAPOI 12: N. Isle and T. Gage tries. B.McConnon kicked three goals. MARIST 11: M. Molloy try. B. R. Curtain kicked four goals. Kaiapoi gained its second win of the season, again by only one point, over Marist in an entertaining. if somewhat scrappy game. A splendid try by Kaiapoi’s left-wing. T. Gage, in the clos-

ling minutes, after an SO-yard; sprint, was the decisive scoring 1 movement. Marist was defi-I I nitely unlucky on occasions and | [deserved at least a draw. i I T. Isle was Kaiapoi’s best j forward. T. Holland was also j impressive in the pack. Apart from Gage, the winners’ best backs were B. Williams and B. McConnon. For Marist, J. Donaldson, L. Mulcare and R. Anderson were I a hard-working trio in the forI wards. C. Worters. J. Costelloe j and E. R. Curtain were enterl prising backs for Marist. Wor- ; ters in particular gave Kaiapoi {many anxious moments with his aggressive pursuing. i Referee: Mr N. E. Taylor. | 18 Points To J. Hawthorne PAPANUI 21: J. Hawthorne (2) and G. Clarke scored tries. Hawthorne kicked six goals. SYDENHAM 13: B. Barron. A. Swan and J. Martin scored tries A. Tuuta kicked two goals. Each team scored three tries, but splendid goal-kicking by the stand-off half, J. Hawthorne, and a superb field-goal, gave papanui its win. Hawthorne scored 18 points and was always a danger to the slow Sydenham defence.

The Papanui half-back. G. Clarke, was competent and aided Hawthorne with a crisp service.

B Marsh was probably the most incisive three-quarter for the winners.

The Papanui forwards, without several of their regular players, were formidable on occasions with barging runs. T. Bisman was rugged in the loose, while K. Peters and R. Sandford were good in the tight. A. Tuuta and A. Swan were sound forwards for Sydenham in the rucks and K. Harding worked hard in the open. J Martin and F. Clark did their utmost to generate life into the lethargic Sydenham backs. Referee: Mr R. Pont.

Cup Draw The third round of Tavendale Cup matches will be played next Saturday because of the New Zealand Rugby League trials at Auckland and the Canterbury XIII v. West Coast XIII on Sunday. The draw is:—Hornby v. Christchurch: Addington V. Sydenham; Marist v. Linwood; Kaiapoi v, Papanui.
