VIETNAM DECISION

Reversal Urged The hope that New Zealand people would call on the Government to reverse its decision to send troops to Vietnam was expressed by the chairman of the national executive of the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation (Mr L. F. J. Ross). To march forward on the present course was to follow the path of madness, calamity and sorrow for all concerned, he said. “Although the Government claims it is for peace, the vote to send troops to Vietnam is a step away from peace—a step to widen the war. “This will place added pressure on the Soviet Union and China to aid North Vietnam, which in turn paves the way for the use of nuclear weapons ‘under certain conditions’ as warned by the United States Administration.'’ Mr Ross said. “It is because the Government has no facts to justify its decision to send troops to Vietnam, that It has not allowed a public referendum to be held on the subject. Similarly, lack of facts has caused the Government to try to silence all democratic opposition by calling it Communist or Communist-in-spired.”
