Southern Belle Dies After Blenheim Race
(From Our Own Reporter) BLENHEIM. The Gore-trained Southern Belle collapsed and died soon after she ran unplaced in the Havelock Hack Handicap at Blenheim yesterday.
Southern Belle, the each way favourite after her brilliant win in the Picton Hack Handicap on Saturday, bled badly during the race. J. R. Dowling managed to pull her up soon after passing the post and he unsaddled her and removed the bridle. She was bleeding badly from the mouth and nostrils. Southern Belle looked very distressed when walked back to the bridcage and she died in her stall a short time later. A four-year-old mare by
Bellborough from Some Day, Southern Belle was trained by E. A. Winsloe for Mr D. S. Duff. She won four races, three of them in the last two months, and her victory on Saturday gave her open class rating. WELL-EARNED WIN
Captain Howe capped off some consistent place form with a decisive win in the Havelock Handicap. Captain Howe ran on the inner about the middle of the field till the three furlongs. R. J. Skelton brought him away from the fence on the
home turn and when the field straightened up he had only First Mink and Royal Admiral to pass. He gathered in First Mink without much bother, and passed Royal Admiral about half a furlong out. Last Dip finished fast from far back for third. She was half a length from Royal Admiral, and a similar distance ahead of Argyle Boy, which was close up all the way. First Mink weakened to fifth and Nice Peter, which also had his chance, led in the others. Almiranta, a minor place getter in the corresponding race on Saturday, recorded her fourth win for the season for her Matangi owner-trainer, Mr I. Robinson, when she beat the staying hacks handily in the Pelorus Handicap. L. K. Tinsley had Almiranta in touch with the pace from the start. She followed Clipper and Caplin into the last half-mile and was a clear leader at the furlong. She had to cope with a solid late challenge from Trold close to the end, but lasted it out well to win by half a length. Trold, one of the tailenders three furlongs out, kept up a sustained run to cut Filspar out of second by half a head. Everglades, close up in the early running but back in the field on the inner on the home turn, ran on solidly for fourth half a length back. MASTIFF—AT LAST Mastiff improved on a lengthy string of minor placings when he outran 10 rivals in the Weld Novice Stakes, for which he was the 2/4 favourite. Mastiff began well but drifted and was fourth equal with Subsiding half a mile out, Aoudo then led by three lengths from How Lucky, No Smoke, and Llansgaro in line ahead of Takatua and Olde Chelsea. Aoudo was beaten outside the furlong, and a little closer to home it was a battle for the lead between How Lucky, Olde Chelsea, Takatua, and Mastiff.
In a tight finish Mastiff did best to win by a head from Olde Chelsea. How Lucky was a neck away third, and Takatua was three parts of a length back fourth.
