TELEPHONE SAMARITANS
Service In Wellington Residents of Wellington and surrounding districts would be able to use the Samaritans emergency telephone service —similar to the Christchurch Central Mission’s Life-line—-next week, the Rev. Morris Russell, rector of St. Matthew’s, Ipswich, said in Christchurch on Sunday evening. Mr Russell has been in New Zealand for six months working with the Dean of Wellington (the Very Rev. W. Hurst) on the new service. The Samaritans emergency service began in London in November, 1953, and had spread throughout the British Isles, said Mr Russell. The service was also available in Germany, Sweden, France. Turkey and Hong Kong. Mr Russell said he thought the service, if introduced in Christchurch, might work in conjunction with Life-line, and might be called Lifeline-Sam-aritan. Mr Russell’s visit to Australia and New Zealand was made possible by the owner of a shipping company, who gave him a free passage to permit him to continue with the work of the Samaritans. Adventists’ Course.— Pastor A. J. Bath, secretary of the Seventh-day Adventists’ Home Health Education Service, will arrive in Christchurch from Sydney this evening. He will conduct a four-day course for 15 to 20 persons at the Christian Youth Centre in Bealey avenue.
