DISPUTED SCORE
Referee Upheld (By our Rugby League Reporter.) The Canterbury RugbyLeague Board of Control upheld the referee's decision and disallowed the appeal by the Christchurch Club against the result of its match with Kaiapoi on April 24. At the end of the match the unofficial scoreboard and some supporters had the score at 20-19 in favour of Christchurch, but the referee (Mr R. A. Pont), after consulting his card, said Kaiapoi had won, 19-18. The board made its decision in committee last evening. In agreeing with the referee the Canterbury board has shown its confidence in the men controlling its fixtures. A referee’s task is not a simple one, and Mr Pont must also share some praise for holding to his belief that his score was correct. It was unfortunate that such an incident occurred and it should serve as a warning to have the scoreboard, even though it is unofficial, properly supervised. Suspension Over The four club playing Saturday transfer suspension for senior players is now over. The Papanui club wrote to the board asking for permission to play M. H. Mohi and J. Hawthorne on Saturday. The board granted permission. The suspension period for lower grade players finishes next Saturday because senior matches began one week earlier than lower grade matches. Country Match Mr R. K. Andrews announced that the'Canterbury training squad to play New South Wales Country on May 15 would be announced this evening. Mr Andrews was appointed Canterbury manager for the match. The New South Wales Country team will arrive in Christchurch on Tuesday, May 11, and will leave for Auckland on Sunday, May 15. There would be training for the players on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, with two sightseeing tours included in the programme.
