Union With Australia ?
Sir, —The concern expressed by the South Island local bodies at the prospects of further northern pillage of southern resources is commendable, but stands little chance of carrying much weight in our present political set-up, with two-thirds of the voters and their representatives having a vested interest in the success of such undertakings. I feel that southern authorities, especially, should look at the potential benefits of a union of our Pacific speck with Australia. With a majority on the Australian mainland, and not in the North Island, the Government would be able to take a much more disinterested look at such projects as inter-island power supply, and could be expected to support the fairest solution. As part of an Australasian union, the South Island (especially if it was a State) would attract more tourists, and with fewer industries than the north, would have less to lose by such a move. Freer entry for our primary produce to the Australian market must also be an attraction. —Yours, AUSTRALASIAN. April 30, 1965.
