Metric System
Sir, —The Associated Chambers of Commerce are quoted as favouring an early change to metric weights and measures in this country, and United Kingdom opinion is quoted in support. But the British Admiralty has stated that “if British industry were to saddle itself with conversion it might deal itself a blow, financially and perhaps commercially, from which it might take a long time to recover.” A large motor manufacturer stated: “U.K. engineers have comparatively recently changed over thread dimensions to a unified form to standardise with America and an attempt to make a further change would be disastrous.” It has been calculated, and Australia confirms this, that the cost of decimal coinage is equivalent in sum to one week’s national income. The cost of a change in weights and measures is more likely to be equivalent to a quarter of a year’s national income. What would be the consequences for our national prosperity?—Yours, etc., K. P. G. MEARS. May 3, 1965.
