Smith Street
Sir, —Might we ask for lighting in Smith street extension? At present at the avenue intersection there is a dark, tree-shadowed corner, no light or name to indicate at night that a street exists. The name on the pole by the tennis court cannot be seen when proceeding east—a real capping prank only to be outdone by the pot-holes and bumps to be met further on. Might I ask when the fences are going to be set back to a true street line and the street widened and reformed properly? Since the opening to the avenue much additional traffic now uses Smith street in preference to Aidwins road, and when the new housing scheme is developed and the traffic from this emptied into Smith street our City Council will then start to think about getting on with the job that should be getting done now.— Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. April 12, 1965. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G- Scoular) replies: “The signboard mentioned by the correspondent was erected as a temporary sign until the standard double-sided street nameplate, already ordered, comes to hand. The council will not be undertaking the setting back of fences and widening of the carriageway until widening ha§ been obtained from all properties in Smith street There are still four properties where this has to be obtained, and it is hoped to complete negotiations for such widening during this financial year. The council recently repaired the worst sections of the carriageway in Smith street, but complete reconstruction will not be undertaken until filling of the council land between Smith street and Tilford street has been completed- However, because of the poor state of the carriageway, instructions were issued two months ago to all contractors filling this area to use the Tilford street entrance.”]
