Stanley Kicks 4 In All-Penalties Game
NEW BRIGHTON U: Four penaltygoals by G. Stanley. SYDENHAM t: Two penalty goals by A. J. Howard. There was little t» commend the early game at Rugby Park between New Brighton and Sydenham. Neither side managed to cross the other's goal-line and New Brighton certainly did not ■how any great superiority over Sydenham as was expected. But to make matters worse, there were a number of unsavoury Incidents involving bad tempered players. One Sydenham player was specifically warned by the referee after striking an opposition player on the back of the neck. His action cost Sydenham three points for the goal posts were well within range of Stanley's penalty kick Although it placed added emphasis on the negative attitude of the players and did nothing to brighten up a dreary match, the defence of the two teams was one of the more pleasing aspects If one was Interested in the finer points. Both sides very effectively cancelled one another out. Tackling wis not alwavs low but it was determined. Overall, there was little be-
tween the backs. New Brighton did attempt to open up play The ball reached the wings with drilled precision on many occasions but there it was smothered. There was no penetration and the passing was unfortunately to no purpose. Sydenham elected to go for the break through in mid-field with even less success.
In the forwards. New Brigh ton should have had a marked superiority. I. H. Penrose did a lot of covering up, while D Dalton and E. Leask were impressive in the loose, but the pack was well held by Sydenham. A. J. Howard was prominent in line-outs and in the right and the captain. K. W. Tucker, set his side a good example. It was left to the kickers to decide the match. Stanley kicked four penalty goals from comfortable positions but the sure manner In which he accomplished this indicated a return to the form which placed him in the limelight a couple of seasons ago. Howard also kicked well, scoring all Sydenham's points, but his chances were fewer and more difficult than Stanley’s. Referee: Mr H. P. Kearney.
