AMENITIES IN BOATS
Owner Denies Claim <X.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 27. A claim that at least 85: per cent of the trawlers based in Auckland did not have; lavatories has been denied by the secretary of the Auckland. Fishing Boat Owners’ Associa-; tion (Mr R. N. Brebner). A correspondent in a letter: to a newspaper said that on! many trawlers cooking was generally done where the I sleeping accommodation was; situated and the galley sink served as a washroom. “Many of the boats in the fleet are between 30 and 40 years old.” said Mr Brebner. “There is just not enough room to fit lavatories and other facilities. We have made it a practice that when a new boat is nearing completion the skipper is consulted and the facilities are completed to his satisfaction.” i Two new trawlers now being built had showers and lavatories. The Marine Department’s chief surveyor of ships in Auckland (Mr A. Wall) said he knew of no regulations governing living conditions on fishing boats.
