SERVICE AWARDS
Presentation To Members The Mayoress (Mr* G. Manning) presented good service badges to nine members at the annual meeting of the Canter* bury Federation of Country Women's Institutes yesterday. "We are known as the garden city but I can’t help thinking that a lot of its colour is due to organisations such as yours who do so much within and beyond your own boundaries,” said Mrs Manning. Service badges were presented to: Mesdames A. Smith (Bryndwr), M. Pitt (Burwood), J. Sims (Coalgate), C. Cornish (Rapakai), R. H. Townsend (Sheffield). E. Hili (South Brighton), M. Joyce (Glentunnel), G. Seaton (Kirwee). Mrs K. Zimmerman was also presented with her service badge which was awarded to her last year when she was overseas. The Canterbury public relations officer, Mr C. N. Todd, spoke of his office's promotion work. Retiring The retiring president, Mrs L. M. Keliaway, was thanked for the work she had done for the Canterbury Federation in her four years as president, eight years on the executive, and eight years as a voluntary organiser, by Mrs F. M. Howell, who presented Mrs Keliaway with a gift and a bouquet. “What I have done has been for the organisation as a whole and what I have put into the organisation I hope someone has benefited from,” said Mrs Keliaway. “I feel to be successful to be on the executive or to be a president you wst think and feel institute.” Mr-. A. R. Gould, convener of the arts and crafts conveners’ circle, presented Mrs Keliaway with a gift in appreciation of the work she had done.
Mesdames M. Candy, D. McRae and W. A. Hodgkinson also spoke in appreciation of the work Mrs Keliaway had done for the federation. Handcraft
Tn her annual report, Mrs Keliaway said the most important work the federation had done during the year was the introduction of handcraft classes at Sunnyside Hospital. It had proved very popular with the patients and each week demonstrators from various institutes had taught simple methods of handcraft.
It was announced that the Canterbury area choral festival would be held on May 31 and the winning choir would compete against the choirs from Mid, North, and South Canterbury Federations and the West Coast Federation, in June.
Results of the knitting competition were announced as follows: hand knitted garment, Hillsborough-Heathcote C.W.I. 1, South Brighton C.W.I. 2, Mairehau C.W’.L 3; machine knitted garment, Spencerville C.W.I. 1.
The winning garments will be entered for the Dominion competition and all garments will be given to C.0.R.5.0.
Three retiring voluntary organisers, Mrs L. M. Kellaway, Mrs H. G. Holmes, and Mrs W. Anderson were presented with gifts by Mrs A. J. Knight. Mrs Keliaway thanked the retiring secretary (Mrs F. IlCouch) and the retiring treasurer (Mrs W. A. Hodgkinson) for the work they had done on the executive and presented them with gifts. Officers
Officers elected were: president, Mrs G. E. MacLachlan; executive, Mesdames A. J. Knight (Coalgate), W. Mason (Centre). R. W. McKechnie (North Beach), E. J. Melhuish (Mairehau), M. Petheram (Hillsborough-Heathcote), N. Louden (Hillsborough-Heath-cote), F. M. Howell (Bryndwr), R. Hudson (Glen Tunnel), and W. E. Charles (Coalgate).
BROWN eggs are much more popular than white with British housewives and in Lancashire they sell for 5s a dozen, one-third above the ruling price.
