‘NOT YET READY’

Territory Of Papua-N.G. (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) PORT MORESBY, April 27. The retiring director of the United Nations information centre in Port Moresby, Mr M. O. Sidky, of Afghanistan, said today he thought it would be at least 10 years before Papua and New Guinea were ready for independence. Mr Sidky said the territory did not have enough trained people to run the country. Speaking at a news conference, he said there were many fields in which the United Nations and specialised agencies could help the territory. "Australia is taking some time to get used to the idea of asking for help, but it should ask now,” he said.

Mr Sidky also said the United Nations could pave the way for English to become the common language by providing language experts. Mr Sidky has resigned from the United Nations staff to return to Afghanistan government service.
