Minima

When planning the heating requirements of a building, it is necessary to assume some minimum outside temperature with which the heating system must cope. It would be extravagant to select the lowest temperature ever recorded in the locality. If, however. Hie heating is to be continuous it must be capable of dealing with such external temperatures as may occur occasionally during the winter. It is therefore reasonable that this outdoor design temperature should match the average monthly minimum. The table which follows has been calculated on this basis by Dr. Lyndon Bastings of the Dominion Physical Laboratory of the D.S.I.R.

Centre Temperature Degrees F Alexandra .. 20 Ashburton . . . . M Blenheim • • • • wt) Christchurch .. .. 25 Dunedin .. .. 30 Fairlie .. 20 Gore .. .. 25 Hamner .. .. 20 Hokitika .. .. 20 Naseby .. 15 Nelson .. 30 Queenstown '.. .. 25 Tiinaru .. .. 25 Waimate .. .. .. —o Westport .. •. 35
