HONORARY DEGREE
Doctorate For N.Z. Scientist (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 27. Victoria University of Wellington is to confer an honorary doctorate of science on the eminent New Zealand scientist. Sir Ernest Marsden. The Vice-Chancellor (Dr. J. Williams) said the degree would be conferred at the university graduation ceremony next week. Sir Ernest Marsden was professor of physics at Victoria from 1914 to 1922 and Assistant Director of Education from 1922 to 1926. In 1926 he was appointed foundation secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and worked in that capacity for 20 years. Sir Ernest Marsden became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1946, and in 1947 was appointed president of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He has been a guest research worker at the Dominion Physics Laboratory and the Royal Cancer Hospital. Dr. Williams said Sir Ernest Marsden was perhaps the doyen of New Zealand scientists. “Although he has now retired from official employment, he is still active in scientific research,” Dr. Williams said
