Defence Staff

Air Commodore P. P. O’Brien, of Wellington, has been

appointed deputy chief of the Defence Staff (personnel and logistics) in the Ministry of Defence. This appointment has been announced by the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre).

Air Commodore O’Brien is director of organisation and staff duties at R.N.Z.A.F. Headquarters. Air Commodore O’Brien graduated B.Com. from Victoria University. He joined the R.N.Z.A.F. in 1940 and served as a pilot in the Far East, India and Burma in World War 11.

Post-war appointments included secretary to the chiefs of staff committee from 1952 to 1955; commanding officer, R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Taieri, from 1955 to 1956; director of organisation and staff duties from 1956 until 1959; and senior New Zealand military planner at S.E.A.T.O. Headquarters, Bangkok, from 1959 to 1962.—(P.A.)
