Five Survivors After Eight Rounds Of Bowls Singles

The Christchurch Bowling Centre's open singles tournament was taken a stage further yesterday when another four rounds were decided. At the close of play only five had come through the two days play, the first being held a week ago. Those to go forward for further games are M. K. Boon (Christchurch) and L. Newton (Dallington), both with two lives, J. Dale (Burwood), T. Wallace (United) and J. Simpson (St. Martins), each with one life. K. Smith (Christchurch), who entered yesterday’s play with two lives, was eliminated in two straight games. He was heavily beaten by Dale, 21-9, and then had another bad run against O. Hynam (Coalgate), and lost 19-13. Boon’s Good Start Boon, an Empire Games representative, began in grand style in his first game against G. Bennett (Fendalton). After leading 9-1 on the sixth head, Boon for the next four heads let Bennett gain the upper hand and he increased his score. But from 9-7, it was Boon all the way and over the next nine heads he scored 18 to Bennett’s two. Boon then met E. Col—ille (St. Albans), last year’s winner. Colville led 6-5 on the fifth head but Boon soon forged ahead to lead, 9-6, on the eighth. Boon did not relinquish the lead and went on to win, 19-12. Dale took command against Boon in the third game and led 5-0 on the third head but Boon came back with four two’s and a single to lead 9-5 on the eighth. Dale fought hard and was only two down on the eleventh but was unable to match the accurate drawing of Boon. Dale then won his next game as a one-lifer against W. Robson (Woolston). Newton had a very easy win in his first game against Hynam, leading 12-0 on the fifth head. In his next three

games Newton met three onelifers. He had little difficulty in disposing of J. Smith (Linwood), 21-7. He then went on to acount for A. Houghton (Dallington) 22-14. Newton started well in his final game against Bennett and led 14-6 in the thirteenth head. Bennett from this point started to apply the pressure and scored well to be 14-16 down on the eighteenth head. On the next two heads Bennett, with a three and a single, jumped into the lead. 18-16. Newton, on the last head, rose to the occasion and with three shots won, 1918, to retain his two lives. Narrow Winner Simpson won his first three games comfortably but only managed to scrape home, 1817, against K. Murray (Opawa) in the last game. Wallace was hard pressed in his first game against C. C. Holland (Fendalton) and only managed to win by one point. He won his next two games with ease and was little troubled in his last to beat J. Stead (Belfast), 22-17. The final rounds of this tournament will be decided on February 13 provided none of the survivors are still in the open pairs.
