North Competition In C.J.C Double

Northern competition from the stablemates Pomare and Te Aro will put fresh interest into the main races at Riccarton on Saturday.

Pomare is engaged against Royal Bid, Foxy Boy and other form runners in the Midsummer Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Te Aro looks one of the brighter prospects in the second leg, the Craven Plate. Pomare and Te Aro are trained at Levin by C. A. Bowry. Another trainer with a runner in each leg of the double is V. D. Clutterbuck.

Clutterbuck prepares Royal Bid, winner of the Wellington Racing Club Handicap last Saturday and top weight in the Midsummer Handicap; also Canadiana, a lightweight in the Craven Plate. Fields for the T.A.B. double are reviewed below. MIDSUMMER HANDICAP, £1500: lim. 3281 ROYAL BID (4) 9-3.—Won in really fast time over lim at Trentham and was a little unlucky in Wellington Cup. Placed at two previous starts. Looks the logical winner. 2566 LLANMAI (1) 8-11.—Ran well at Trentham. Was sixth in Adams Mile on final day. 1481 ANDALUSIA (8) 8-B.—Won at Wingatui last start and must be given a chance here. 2314 GOLDEN GLEN (9) 8-6. Wyndham Cup winner. Last-start fourth was behind Eiffel Tower at Southland. 5001 FOXY BOY (3) 8-3.— Won easily in Ashhurst Cup at last start and could be dangerous again. 3359 MARLOW (6) 7-12.— Would not be fancied much in this. 7 POMARE (10) 7-12.—Ran well first up at Trentham for seventh over a mile. Stays well and crossed the line second in the New Zealand St. Leger last year. 0228 MORRIS FRANCIS (5) 7-8 Has ability but on recent efforts would not stand much chance here. 5154 GOLD FIND (7) 7-B.—Was principal in a race mixup at Hokitika when fourth last start after losing several lengths at start. This looks a bit rich, though. 4343 DONNA GOLA (2) 7-7. Last-start third in sprint at Oamaru, but not fancied here. CRAVEN PLATE, £1000; 7f. 8112 CASTLE FLIGHT (5) 9-0 In good form at present. Followed two wins with a close second at Wingatui last start. 8100 HUSHAWAY (6) 8-9. Failed at Trentham but won here at the Cup meeting. This field has little of the class he met at Trentham. 5415 APPROVAL (14) 8-7.—ln fair form lately and won sprint at Hororata two starts back. This is stronger, but he could be close. 1127 PICKET (16) 8-s.—Racing fairly on the West Coast, but this looks a bit rich. .4675 TE ARO (3) 8-4.—Good fifth at Trentham over this distance at last start and previous form fairly good. Looks a definite prospect. 2211 GENERAL GILBERT (11) 8-2.—Quite a good sprinter when right. Trounced the opposition on the West Coast in last two starts. This is much tougher, but he could have a chance. 1168 WAVERLEY (7) 8-I. Hardly likely on recent runs. 086 ROYAL LEIGH (1) 7-11.—Oc-casionally runs a good one, but has been out of form lately. 9043 SATINETTE (2) 7-10.—Last-start third at Dunedin after another placed fourth. This is harder, but might be close. 4800 CANADIANA (10) 7-9. Ran last in sprint at Trentham last start. Previous form not up to much. 6663 RACE GUIDE (8) 7-B. Runs well on occasions, but hardly likely to trouble this field. 0237 APACHE (17) 7-B.—Failed over a middle distance last start, but is a fair sprinter and previous two starts yielded placings. 1131 DARK SEAMAN (12) 7-B. Recent hack graduate with promise. Three wins from last four starts. Won over this distance at Kumara last start. Might be close up. 4207 GOLDEN VANITY (4) 7-8 Known more as a stayer and might find this too short. 7630 AVAST (10) 7-7—Does not seem likely to worry this field over this distance. 6848 GABBLER (9) 7-7.—Hopes of a win here look remote. 2547 RAE’S HOPE (15) 7-7 Beat one at at Hokitika last start.
