Mission To Seek Aust. Tourists
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 3. Thirteen members of a £lO,OOO New Zealand tourist mission to Australia met in Wellington today for briefing before their departure on February 21.
It will be New Zealand’s first full-scale tourist mission.
The mission has been sponsored by the New Zealand Travel and Holiday Association with financial support from the Government. £5OOO Budget The mission is working on a £5OOO budget for the 18-day visit to Australia but with trade members paying their own way it is expected the total expenditure will be £lO,OOO. Leading the party will be the association president, Mr J. L. Chapman, other delegates Include the radio personality, Selwyn Toogood, the artist, Peter Mclntyre, and representatives of overseas and internal airlines, hotels and motels, transport operators, travel and banking agents. The mission will be pro-
moting the tourist potential of New Zealand in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, Wollongong and Newcastle. “Best Market” Mr H. M. Denton, chairman of the association’s promotional committee, told trade interest delegates that Australia was New Zealand’s best tourist market. He said the mission’s objectives were to generate maximum consumer publicity on New Zealand and its tourist attractions. Mr Denton said the mission also wanted to show Australian travel agents the ease in which New Zealand could be sold as a compact and comprehensive tourist package. Mr Chapman said 40,000 Australians visited New Zealand on long and short-term stays last year.
