Mr and Mrs E. J. Greenwood defeated Mr and Mrs E. R. McCree in a play-off when Dailington held a married couples’ competition recently. In the dub fours championship only three teams remain, and the four of D. Martin, F. Bonifacio, D. Stuart and L. Newton have two lives. Teams skipped by J. Garven and A. Pritchard have one life. The singles and pairs events have reached the quarter-finals. In the singles, R. Pirrie is the only player with two lives, a distinction shared by the pair, M. Briggs and P. Griffin. T. McAllister and V. F. Claridge had a convincing win over T. Joyce and R. Pirrie in a pairs quarterfinal match.

Canterbury suffered another sad loss last Saturday with the sudden death of James Warner Simon. Mr Simon, apart from being a very proficient bowler, was a most pleasing personality and an administrator of much more than average merit. He took a very keen interest in all aspects of the dub and showed a bold approach to the everyday problems of bowling, which was appreciated by all. He was an acknowledged authority on rules. Although comparatively young when he died, aged 56, 'lr Simon left many friends in the sport.

The final of the Edgeware dub fours’ championship was played between rinks skipped by D. Wood and J. Cowies. Wood led 10-nil after four heads but Cowles wore down this lead and went ahead after 16 heads. The lead changed two or three times in the next four heads and they began the last one at 17all. Cowles held the shot until Wood’s first bowl, which was too narrow, luckily hit the outside bowl of two that were touching each other and

knocked the inner bowl in foe shot. Cowles' last bowl was astray and Wood’s rink won, 18-17. The winning rink was: Wood, H. Stockdill. M. Hamilton and P. Packman.

After a delay of some weeks, the Beckenham rinks final was played recently and it provided some interesting bowls between rinks skipped by E. Fox and A. Wootton. Players took some time to settle down and the first half was a very even one, but Fox’s team gradually drew away to win 23-14. F. Ledgard led very ably throughout and was consistently supported by L. Melrose, G. Cotton and Fox. The runners-up—A. Newman, R. Rollands, G. Gibb and skip, A. Wootton—also played good bowls.

J. O’Halloran will meet B. Clarke in the finals of the Opawa club championships.

Clarke defeated D. Vaughan. 20-19, In a semi-final. Both Clark and O’Halloran have been playing excellent bowls this season, and the final should produce a high standard. With five rounds of the fours nearly completde, Rowe has four wins and O'Halloran, Madsen. Kerridge and R. Jones have three wins.

The Cashmere club championships are nearing completion. A two-lifer, G. Jones, has already reached the final in the singles and will play the winner of H. N. Archer and L. A. Polson. R. Wilkins’s team has reached the rinks’ final and will play the winner of J. Mill and A. F. Roberts. Some very good games have been played in the Colts' championship, with F. Burgoyne, G. Voller and H. E. Taylor still in the competition. In section I of the Watson Shield competition, the club’s team of A. B. Boal, H. N. Archer, L. A. Polson and skip, A. J. Roberts, has won the six rounds played so far and have one further game to complete the present round.

Rinks have reached postsection play at Sydenham. With such strong teams as Besley, Deavoll, Hannam, Kinsett, Lawson and Wise, some good bowls should eventuate. The pairs are well advanced and those who have shown good form include Barron, Bowden, Deavoll and Duncan. The singles have been slow, but most members are now keen to get under way now all holidays are completed. Colts games played thus far indicate a wealth of talent for the club in the future.
