Campers Stranded By Floods
. Until about midday yesterday, flood damage had made it impossible for campers and residents on the north side of the North Opuha river bridge to go to work. Absence from school was excusable for children dependent on school buses.
The recent flood washed away the southern approaches to the bridge. Repairs by MacKenzie County Council staff have allowed vehicles to cross the river. Campers at the popular picnic spot, Corra Lynn, experienced no hardship, as they were supplied with butter, milk, and vegetables and were able to vary their diet with mushrooms.
They were unable to get out of the area, which is about 12 miles north-east of Fairlie.
Among the stranded camjers was a Timaru party, Mr and Mrs A. L. Williams and
their three children, of 8 Kiwi drive, and Christopher MeGeorge, of 35 Cain street
The detour on the Main South road at the Pareora bridge was expected to be maintained until the Ministry of Works had completed permanent repairs, said the secretary of the South Canterbury Automobile Association (Mr G. R. Thompson?.
