Warned To Check Claims For Books

(New Zealand Press Association)

NAPIER, February 3.

Claims by itinerant salesmen that the books they are selling are approved by educational authorities should be checked before the books are bought, said Mr P. L. Page, secretary-manager of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board.

He urged parents to seek the advice of. head teachers about the use of these books in schools. “The board has received a large number of inquiries and complaints from parents of schoolchildren about the sale of books by itinerant salesmen.” Mr Page said. “They claim, or infer, that the books are approved for use in schools as a necessary part of the syllabus. “The education board has

no knowledge of these books and has not given any recommendation or approval for their use,” he said. Mr Page said many books were published which could be classified as educational and of value and could have some association with the school curriculum.

“But I suggest that parents should seek advice from their head teachers about any books for use in schools,” Mr Page said.
