Seals

Sir,—The picture of the Weddell seal in a recent edition of your newspaper prompts me to inquire if the Government intends to cease the killing of these harmless creatures, now that the Antarctic Treaty signed by 13 nations, of which New Zealand is one, gives full protection to all forms of wild life on the Antarctic continent. The continued killing of about 100 of these animals each year would seem to me to be in conflict with both the letter and the spirit of the Antarctic Treaty.—Yours, etc., B. NORRIS. January 25, 1965.
