Capping Procession

Sir,—The time approaches for the capping festivities of our university. For some years I have refrained from watching the procession, as I had always come away depressed at the low standard of humour. Has it ever occurred to those in charge that there are still plenty of people who thoroughly enjoy good, clean fun, humour and wit? Could they this year try treating the public to something that the cream of our educated youth should be capable of producing in the way of wholesome entertainment? How refreshingly different it would be if they assumed we were all “butterflies” instead of “blowflies.” What about starting a new era in Canterbury? They will be surprised at the support they will get along with the respect of thousands of clean-minded citizens.—Your, etc. WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE PURE. February 3, 1965.
