£45,000 Sydney Flat

A retired businessman (Mr Sidney Howard), the former owner of a private hotel, has paid an Australian record price of nearly £45,000 for a home .unit (own-your-own flat) at Darling Point, an exclusive Sydney suburb. Mr Howard bought the unit unfurnished and without fittings. He will spend £15,000 on the furnishings and decoration, including a Japanese rockery and waterfall and two sevenfoot Ming vases valued at more than £3500. After he moves In, he will face a bill of about £lO a week, for maintenance of the two lifts in the building, the gardens and cleaning.
The home unit Is at the top of a 20-storey, Yshaped block still under construction on the site of the old. Anthony Hordern estate in Darling Point
The highlight of the view is a panorama of Sydney Harbour with the bridge in the background. On clear days the Blue Mountains can be easily seen.
The unit has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a family room, livingroom, diningroom, study, kitchen and a large balcony.
“I think it will be ideal>” Mr Howard said today.
Mr Howard has already rejected an offer to sell the unit at a profit of £5OOO. He has just sold his present home for £70,000.
