RAILWAY GARDENS
Belfast Judged Best The L. B. Hart Challenge Cup for the best railway station garden in the northern district of the South Island has been won by the Belfast Railway Station with 86 points. Heathcote station was second with 84 points, Papanui third with 72, and Rolleston fourth with 70. Judging was done by two members of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, Messrs R. A. Proctor and J. Watling. They said a very high standard had been maintained in the entries in spite of the dry season. A pleasing feature was the increased interest in permanent planting by the full use of suitable shrubs. The Belfast station last won the competition in 1940, but has been runner-up for the last two years. Its display this year comprised mainly begonias, marigolds, fuschias, roses, verbina and geraniums in beds bordered with blue and white lobelia.
