GUILTY OF CONSPIRING
Soccer Player Convicted (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) NOTTINGHAM, Jan. 19. A soccer player, Ronald Howells, was found guilty in court here yesterday of conspiring to “fix” an English League match. Howells, aged 29, who formerly played with Walsall and Scunthorpe United is one of 10 players or former players accused of similar offences. He was convicted of conspiring with former Mansfield Town players, S. Chapman and J. Gauld, and others unknown, to ensure that Scunthorpe lost its match against Derby County in April, 1963. Gauld and Chapman had previously pleaded guilty.
Three other defendants have also pleaded guilty and hearings are pending against the other four, wh'o include former England internationals Tony Kay (Everton) and Peter Swan (Sheffield Wednesday). They have pleaded not guilty.
