Three Hororata Candidates Win At Ashburton Trial

Three candidates for Hororata on Saturday won events at the trials conducted by the Mid-Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association on the Ashburton racecourse yesterday. Flight Adios, which is engaged in the Selwyn Handicap on Saturday, was an impressive duai winner. Milford Nurse, a candidate for the Malvern Handicap, won an event for trotters and Belbay, which is to run in the Snowden Handicap, won an event for maiden pacers. Flight Adios was most impressive in his two wins, the first being in a 2min 19sec class race. He won this with great ease by about three lengths from Mister Chips, with 10 lengths to Mystery Jim and another big gap to Julie Hanover. He reverted to his own class, 2min 20sec, for his second win and scored by five lengths from Kim Mani with

12 lengths further back to Town Marshall. In the running of this event Flight Adios was forced to cover a lot of extra ground, and his time of 3min 18sec for the mile and a half was extremely smart under the circumstances. It was actually faster than one heat of the free-for-all.

Flight Adios has had one start this season, at Timaru. He broke badly at the start and trailed the field. Starting from 36 yards behind, Milford Nurse comfortably beat a field of 2mm 20sec class trotters. She began well and gradually made up her handicap, being in the leading division on the turn. She ran on well to beat the unlucky Beverley Globe, which broke on the turn when a clear leader, by a length and a half, with Hialea well up next.

Milford Nurse showed much promise last season, but this term has not been placed from several starts. The other Ashburton winner engaged at Hororata is Belbay, which won a heat of the 2min 20sec class event for pacers. He finished on strongly from well back to beat Strathallan and Arakina narrowly, but both of the other two horses were eased down well short of the line. Excellent Race

The first heat of the Free-for-AU saw an excellent race, with victory going to Fox Able in the smart time of 3min 15 2-ssec for the mile and a half. Fox Able won by two lengths from Rustic Lad, with four lengths to the trotter, Robert Medoro. Another trotter, Mighty Chief added considerable interest to the race after breaking up and losing all chance whatsoever. At the mile post he was giving the leaders 20 lengths, but by the half-mile he had moved around the field into second position. Understandably, he wilted in the straight The leaders were privately timed to run from the mile to the half-mile to lmin fieec,

so Mighty Chief’s time for that section of the race must have been exceptional. Results:—
