Might Fit For Wellington Stakes

“The Press" Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Might gave evidence that he is ready to test his older rivals in Saturday’s Wellington Stakes when he ran the best half-mile in training at Awapuni yesterday. Might has thickened up again after losing a little condition on his Ellerslie trip and his bold gallop yesterday was the highlight of the morning. The Wellington Cup candidates, Tasman Lad and Bandon, worked well over a mile, and Copper King dashed over five furlongs on the plough in fine style. Might galloped on the course proper where the trestles were out 35ft. Ridden by his race day jockey, R. W. Taylor, he ran half a mile freely in 50sec, the last three furlongs in 37 4-ssec.. Tasman Lad was shading Bandon at the finish of a mile. They ran the distance in 1:47 4-ssec, the last seven furlongs in 1:32 2-ssec and the final three in 40sec. They had something in reserve at the finish. Tasman Lad failed in the New Zealand Cup and Bandon at Auckland, so they will have to be taken on trust at two miles in the Wellington Cup. L. J. Hodren will ride Bandon, and L. K. Tinsley Tasman Lad. Apa and Sundeedwere well matched over six furlongs in 1:19 4-ssec, the last three in 40 l-ssec. Apa will contest the Anniversary Handicap on

Saturday and then probably the Ashhurst Cup. Looks Well Sundeed is in the Te Marua High-weight. He failed in open class at Tauherenikau but won a high-weight at Awapuni last month so he will be fancied on Saturday. He looks well. Talavera and Woodwitch completed half a mile on terms in 51 l-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Talavera has run three seconds on end so she will be respected in the Fitzherbert Handicap. Woodwitch is in the same race. On the plough Copper King worked with dash over five furlongs in l:3sec, the last three in 38sec. He joined up with Valentino and Brown Ribbon but ran away from them over the last three furlongs. Copper King looks a picture and he looks certain to race well in the Anniversary Handicap.
