Reid, Barton In 179 Partnership

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 19. J. R. Reid scored a brilliant century at the Basin Reserve today to lead Wellington to a commanding position over Northern Districts.

Reid hit 126 runs before he was run out. It was his thirty-seventh century in first-class cricket, his second in succession. The first was against Auckland last week. Wellington scored 431 for nine wickets before declaring. Northern, after its first innings of 145, was left to score 286 runs to avoid the innings defeat. At stumps, after batting from the tea adjournment, it was 93 for the loss of three wickets.

Reid wore sun glasses today because of an eye infection.

Reid was ably partnered by P. T. Barton. Together they put on 179 in 129 minutes for the fourth wicket. Barton, who had come to the wicket at 61 for two, stayed while 280 runs were added. He was out for 94. Reid’s total was 126 In 129 minutes, with 13 fours and four sixes. One six, over mid-wicket, crashed through a pavilion window. Barton had gone into the forties driving fluently, when Reid joined him. The pair went from 150 to 200 in 25 minutes, from 200 to 250 in 34, from 250 to 300 in 38— 150 runs in 97 minutes.
