Two Swimming Records
Two records were set at the third session of the Canterbury swimming championships at the Centennial Pool last night and, in all probability, the length of the programme represented another record in brevity. The evening’s swimming was over in just 65 minutes. During that time, however, enough was seen to whet the appetite for the final session tomorrow night when a number of important titles will be at stake. The two records were set by juniors, Lyndsey Falk (Wharenui) and William Brown (Riccarton), in winning the girls’ 110 yd butterfly and the men’s 220 yd breaststroke respectively. Miss Falk, whose reputation has been built on her freestyle form, clipped 2.7 sec from Miss L. Cox’s junior butterfly mark, and Brown chopped 3.Bsec from M. J. M. Hay’s three-year-old men’s breaststroke record in scoring a resounding 10yd win. Near Record Brown’s time of 2min 53sec was only O.Ssec outside G. V. Ruiio-Saban’s —national junior record. Had he bettered the existing figure the l«-year-old Brown would not have gained the record as he was competing in a senior event. But he has a further opportunity tomorrow night, when the junior championship is decided.
In the absence of the titleholder. M. Hay. it was thought that his brother, R. J. Hay. a first year senior, would dispute first placing with Brown. But the former Greymouth boy established a lead of a yard and a half by the end of the first length and gradually moved away from the field. Hay battled hard for second place with R. Bliss (Spreydon), holding a one-yard lead throughout the race.
In a good display of butterfly swimming. Miss Falk outsprinted her clubmate. Judith Berryman. to win by a clear margin
of six seconds. Half an hour later she completed a meritorious double by retaining her girls’ 440yds freestyle title. In the backstroke races Miss L. Harrow regained the women’s 220yds title she first won two years ago with her superior stamina. Miss J. Wright . (Riccarton), the 110yds champion, was level with Miss Harrow at half-way but could not hold her. In the absence in Australia of the champion, W. R. Williamson, M. Gould (St. Albans) added the 110yds men’s title to the 220yds championship he won on Saturday. Gould’s time of Imin 12.5 sec compared favourably with Williamson’s centre record. The 14-year-old Wharenui junior, A. Kindred, who won the senior 1650yds freestyle championship on Saturday, returned to his specialty stroke to win the boys’ 110yds backstroke in a tight finish with C. Kinder (Spreydon).
