Pakistan Pair Punish Spinners

(New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, Jan. 19. Two late bowling changes by the captain of the President’s XI (G. Dowling) enabled the Pakistan touring team to seize the initiative on the second day of its match at Palmerston North.

Dowling brought on D. N. Matthews (legspin) and R. Morgan (off-spin) and Saaed Ahmad and Javed Burki took 49 runs from five overs from these two bowlers.

This enabled Pakistan to be 183 for four wickets at stumps, 149 runs ahead of the President's XI, which took a 34-run lead on the first innings.

Just before Matthews was brought into the attack, G. Bartlett, in a violent threeover spell, had taken the wickets of Ghulam Abbas and Naushad Ali. both caught behind the wicket, and had Saeed in great trouble. Dowling’s change to Matthews was hard to follow. If Bartlett had been given another over, he could well have taken the wicket of Saeed, who was to reap such a harvest. Matthews bowled three overs in the first innings which cost him 31 runs, and his three in the second innings cost him 28. His bowling was a mixture of fulltosses and long-hops. When Pakistan began batting in its second innings Naushad and Ilyas were given a rough time by Bartlett and B. Andrews, who bowled particularly well in a very long spell. Ilyas was dropped by Morgan and Dowling, and even-

tually received a hard knock on the upper right arm when trying to hook Andrews. He retired hurt.

Asif Iqbal, rather suprisingly, replaced Ilyas, but he was caught by Morgan at short square-leg off Andrews without scoring. This brought Saeed to the wicket and he began in the same vein as in the first innings. He took 10 runs from his first three balls.

Naushad spent a long time at the crease, scoring from cuts and deflections. However, he went to Andrews eventually, nicely caught at first slip by Jarvis. Shafqat Rana, after a quiet start, began to score freely. He took three fours from an over from Irving, but Bartlett replaced Irving and had Shafqat caught behind. Ghulam Abbas came to the wicket, played two “memory”

shots at Bartlett, hit him twice through covers, and was then caught by Speed when trying to hook. Bartlett’s first two overs in this spell produced two wickets and five no-balls. NEW BOWLERS When Burki came to the wicket Bartlett was replaced by Matthews. This was the signal for the dam to burst and Dowling made matters worse by taking off B. Hampton and replacing him with Morgan, who could not strike a length. Earlier in the day, the President’s XI had batted through to score 258, giving it a lead of 34. The features were a fine innings by P. G. Z. Harris, who scored 62 before being stumped by Naushad as he danced down the wicket, and the last wicket partnership between Matthews and B. Irving, which took the score from 211 at lunch to 258.
