DIVING FOR COINS
Stream Found Polluted (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, Jan. 19. The coin-collecting youngsters of Whakarewarewa appear likely to have a limited financial future after a Health Department warning on sewage pollution in Puarenga stream. Mr H. O. McFarland, secretary of the Whakarewarewa Maori Council, said today that children would have to be kept away from the stream in view of the latest report on the dangers of a typhoid outbreak. The children have collected a fortune over the years in jumping for “silver” thrown by the thousands of tourists who cross the bridge at the entrance to Rotorua’s top tourist drawcard. The pollution is believed to be caused by discharge from the Waipa State mill village, which lies upstream. A Ministry of Works engineer has made a preliminary report on the problem.
